Bio
I’ve been online since the early 1990s, having discovered CompuServe before Marc Andreessen launched Mosaic at the University of Illinois in 1993. In 1995, I built and ran one of the first political candidate websites in Washington State. I then rode the dot-com boom as a communication consultant who could speak web, until the crash. In 2001, I began my fourth career as a full-time academic, first teaching techies about communications and now teaching communicators about technology. Since 2000, I have also taught newbies how to ride motorcycles.
At the University of Washington, I teach undergraduate digital journalism as well as classes in the Master of Communication in Digital Media program. My areas of interest are the economics of information and the impact of technologies on institutions of power, like journalism and politics. I hold an undergraduate degree in journalism from the University of Georgia and a master of science degree in agricultural economics from Virginia Tech.
About My 365 Project

I launched the project on my birthday, 21 August 2010.
I am better at ideation and launch than sustain: my M-B personality type (ExTP) is one of “possibilities” which runs counter to routine. Thus one of my goals is to impose one “routine” for the next year. Another is right-brained: to help me become a better photographer by forcing me to think about the world via the lens, each and every day.* Also, my writing has helped me identify issues that are my passion, I’m hoping this project does something similar. Finally, this is a milestone birthday (55), so it feels appropriate to spend the year in a form of introspection (see Passages: Predictable Crises of Adult Life).
Originally, I planned to use WiredPen as the platform, but I changed my mind. Folks who read WP regularly expect words, not pictures!
I expect most of the photos to be shot with my iPhone4; the best camera is the one you have with you! I don’t have a theme (yet) and I expect I will experiment with tools like Hipstamatic and ColorSpash. And I will also post to my Flickr account.
Those of you who know me know that I am a “night” person — so I expect that most of these will be posted in the second half of the day! Just saying. :-)
* I’m not promising that every uploaded photo will have been taken that day.
